Our mission is to advance God's Kingdom in Detroit, together (Matt. 6:10)

Our vision is to work together with all members of the Church to ensure that every single person within the city limits of Detroit would clearly hear the gospel (Acts 19:10)

THE STORY

In the books of the Bible describing Jesus’ life here on earth we see that he mentions “the kingdom of God” 126 times. He teaches us to pray in Matthew 6:10, “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” At Unity Church, that is our prayer for the city we love deeply, that God’s kingdom would come and his will would be done in Detroit as it is in heaven. We desire, as a church, to be in step with the heart of Jesus to advance God’s kingdom in Detroit, together

Yet, the issue is that Detroit cannot look like the kingdom of God if our hearts do not recognize him as king. Through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, when you “declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).  A person who recognizes Jesus as king will start to look like the king, and a whole city that recognizes Jesus as king will start to look like his kingdom. The question then becomes, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” (Rom. 10:14).

We know not all might come to believe, but we want everyone to have a chance. This is why we envision working together with all members of the Church to ensure that every single person within the city limits of Detroit would clearly hear about this good news of Jesus. This good news is not only talk, but it impacts how we love our neighbors in the city and fight against things like racism, housing injustices, poverty, and broken school systems. We know that this vision will never come to pass without a strong working of the Holy Spirit through believers in Detroit walking together in unity, encouraging everyone to use their God-given gifts for his glory in their homes, neighborhoods, jobs, and schools, all over this city.

God is already up to something special here in Detroit and we won’t give up on his people, “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness.” (Ephesians 4:13).
